As a webcam performer, it is very important that you are broadcasting the best image possible. Even if you are the hottest model on the internet, people are going to move on if they can't see you clearly. So we have put together this page to give you some things to consider when choosing a webcam.
• First of all, your webcam should have a glass lens instead of plastic. It will provide a much clearer image. Cameras with glass lens are generally a little more expensive, but it is definitely worth the investment.
• Resolution below 320x240 is going to make you look pixelated and blocky. Most of the newer webcams will have resolutions much higher than that.
• Look for a camera that is capable of producing 30 frames per second (fps). Below that you will look jittery and jumpy. Of course, the fps you broadcast at has a lot to do with your computer speed and internet connection, but 30 is the number to strive for.
• Being able to broadcast audio in your room is something that can really add to your performance. So look for a camera with a built in microphone.
Based on our own personal experience and the reviews of others we have chosen Logitech as the top brand of webcams. They have cameras available in all price ranges and come with some really useful software that gives you alot of manual control over your image. Here are some of our top picks:
Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 price: $100
This is definitely our top choice in webcams. A Carl Zeiss lens provides resolution up to 1600x1200 at 30 fps. The software that comes with the camera allows full auto or manual control over such things as focus, white balance, and zoom. With an integrated microphone and features like Rightlight2, Rightsound, and face-tracking, this webcam has everything you need.
Logitech Quickcam Pro for Notebooks price: $80
If you're working from a laptop this camera is the way to go. With a Carl Zeiss lens, resolution up to 960x720, and 30 fps, this camera is very adequate. It comes with most of the same software and features of the Quickcam Pro 9000 and, in addition, has a clip for hooking onto a laptop monitor. One thing to note, however, as a webcam performer you may be asked to move your camera or change the angle. This can be difficult when the webcam is clipped to your screen so the included stand will probably be more useful.
Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX price: $45
This is the camera for those looking for a less expensive alternative. It is capable of 640x480 resolution and works well in low light situations. And with an integrated microphone, this webcam has all the essentials at a low price.
